Let’s Cut the Red Tape

A transparent government goes hand in hand with an accountable one. A recent State Audit proves that regulatory reform, despite policies implemented nearly 20 years ago and more recent heightened rhetoric by Gov. Gregoire, never really happened.

In fact, the audit found that regulatory reform has been a low priority in Olympia. The perpetuation and success of Washington’s struggling small businesses depends on smart regulatory reform. Washington is one of the most expensive, heavily regulated states in which to do business in the country. While we have a high business start rate, we have one of the highest business failure rates. Despite its innovation and productivity in a myriad of vital industries, Washington has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.

As a farmer and a strong advocate for business, I know the impact heavy regulations and high costs have on our statewide economy. It’s time to elect more lawmakers whose first priority is the well-being of their constituents.
